I have been practicing for 33 years, and the most important aspect of my job has not changed during my time in dentistry. I strive to make sure that my patients are comfortable and that they have a positive experience when they come in for a visit. Whether they come in for a basic checkup or an intricate procedure, I explain as much as possible to my patients. The more they understand about the visit and the tools that I will be using, the better the end result will be.
One of the tools that I use confidently with my patients is the laser. Although the benefits of lasers in dentistry have been discussed for many years, not every dentist has made the decision to invest time and money in their use, which means that many practitioners are missing out on the myriad of benefits provided by lasers for an ever-expanding list of clinical applications. When compared with traditional methods, lasers afford oral healthcare professionals the opportunity to perform more procedures in less time and with better results. Patients also benefit from laser dentistry because it results in faster treatment with less overall discomfort. This can make patients more willing to accept future dental treatment recommendations and translate into an increase in patient referrals.
I implemented the DenMat NV® PRO3 Microlaser in my practice and have found that it is a crucial piece of technology that can be utilized on patients every day. This diode laser has allowed me to provide my patients with additional procedures at a high rate of patient acceptance because they perceive the treatment to be high-tech. In many cases, there is improved access and field of vision and a decreased treatment time. The laser has reduced my need to use a scalpel and totally eliminated my use of electrosurgery. In addition, it facilitates the provision of "same-day" dentistry in which there is minimal bleeding, minimal postoperative discomfort, faster healing, little or no gingival recession, and more precise results with little or no tissue scarring. It has proven to be a helpful tool in treating challenging periodontal conditions and provides predictable results.
I believe that one of the greatest benefits of soft-tissue lasers is their ability to provide minimally invasive treatment for both preventive and restorative dental procedures. Because lasers can be used to cut, ablate, vaporize, sterilize, and coagulate tissue within the oral cavity, other indications for the utilization of these devices in dental settings include oral surgery, arthroscopy, gastroenterology, general surgery, dermatology, and plastic surgery. Laser dentistry has become the standard of care, and all clinicians should feel comfortable offering it in their practices.
