Shorten the Distance to Optimal Impressions
Traditional, heavy 50 mL dispensing guns can keep practitioners' hands as much as 8 inches away from the impression site and require them to apply more than 7 pounds of pressure to pull the trigger. Oftentimes, this results in a lack of stability and precision, material waste, and less-than-optimal impressions.
Designed with clinicians and procedures in mind, the digit Power® Dispenser from Dentsply Sirona overcomes the challenges of traditional 50 ml and back-filled syringe delivery systems. Its lightweight, pen-grip design allows clinicians to work far more ergonomically and precisely, offering a radically different way to dispense low viscosity impression material that enhances accuracy through optimized control during delivery.
"I like it; it requires no force," says Robert Ritter, DMD, a partner in a private practice in Jupiter, Florida. In his recent interview with Inside Dentistry's Product Talk, he explains how the digit Power Dispenser takes away some of the issues associated with traditional, hand-held dispensers. "It's been wonderful to use, and I've had no problems with it. I captured a complete lower arch impression with it, and that is not one of the easier impressions to capture."
The digit Power Dispenser shortens the distance between the practitioner's hand and the tooth preparation to 3 inches. With this closer proximity, there is considerably less risk of tip movement while dispensing, which results in a more accurate flow of the wash material. In many cases, this system can be used without retraction cord or paste.
To obtain precision placement of the impression material, the ultra-thin intrasulcular tip can be rotated 360°. About the same size as a periodontal probe, this tip can easily reach into the sulcus, enhancing clinicians' ability to capture subgingival margins. The digit Power Dispenser works in conjunction with the completely redesigned Aquasil® Ultra+ Smart Wetting® Impression Material, which features state-of-the-art intraoral hydrophilicity and tear strength to deliver better-than-ever results by optimizing performance in all areas.
Ritter mentions that he has had good experiences with Aquasil Ultra. "I think it's one of the best traditional vinyl polysiloxane materials on the market. For me, the material is very easy to dispense using the digit Power Dispenser. I need more working time to capture an entire upper arch, and I estimate that the dispensing time/working time is approximately 2 to 2-and-a-half minutes. It worked well the first time; I did not have to pull an impression as a backup."
Practitioners have more control when capturing a full arch because their hand is so much closer to the preparation where they're expressing the material, making it a much less stressful experience. "I agree, it's much closer to the preparation," Ritter says. "And with a traditional gun, sometimes you're in the middle of dispensing the material, and right at the point when you're around the margin, you have to go back and open up the gun to get another click in. So, it's not homogeneous."
However, with the digit Power Dispenser, Ritter achieves a homogeneous flow from start to finish. "It's much more consistent, and I'm much more confident in getting a homogenous mix. I was recently able to impress an entire arch-a 3-implant impression on the complete maxillary-using just one digit Power Dispenser cartridge."
