One-Bottle Success for All of Your Clinical Needs
The descriptor "universal" in a dental product name can be used to imply a range of features. For a bonding system to be considered truly universal, it should be able to be used with all direct and indirect restorations, bond to all substrates, and be compatible with all resin cements without requiring an additional activator. ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL®, the culmination of more than 30 years of adhesive research at BISCO, has met those requirements.
Notarantonio can confirm that this is a true one-bottle system in practice. "There's never a need for an additional bottle of activator, which is sometimes needed for other systems when working with dual-cure resins," he explains. "Using ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL eliminates any questions or concerns in my practice because no matter what cement we're working with, we're never worried about compatibility."
The low film thickness of ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL allows it to readily flow into etched surfaces, and it provides both chemical and mechanical sealing. ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL offers the flexibility to perform total-, self- or selective-etch procedures. "Because I use it for everything, I can keep my bonding protocol consistent," Notarantonio says. "Then I treat the surface of the restoration according to the manufacturer's directions. This has been very successful for me."
ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL contains the adhesive monomer 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP), which bonds to natural tooth structure, metals, and metal oxides. Unlike other acidic phosphate monomers, which may decalcify rather than adhere to tooth structure, MDP chemically bonds to Ca++ ions and forms stable MDP-Ca salts. These salt deposits at the adhesive interface form nanolayers, making the adhesive interface more resistant to biodegradation, which is why MDP-containing adhesives demonstrate excellent long-term durability.1
Dentists are known to mix and match their products according to their preferred features and techniques, using adhesives, etchants, cements, and composites from different companies. "Fortunately, ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL is compatible with all of them," Notarantonio says. "In my case, that's important because my practice has multiple doctors, and we don't all like the same products. ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL provides us with an effective bonding system that we can trust from experience, but it also gives us the leeway to try a different composite or cement. In a practice with multiple doctors, that versatility is critical."
In the clinical case that Notarantonio shared with Product Talk, he demonstrated his use of ALL-BOND UNIVERSAL along with SELECT HV® ETCH, a high viscosity 35% phosphoric acid etchant from BISCO. The patient, a dentist, accepted the proposed treatment plan for veneers on teeth Nos. 7, 8, 9, and 10 to improve her smile. Minimal preparation was employed to conserve as much tooth structure as possible, and as a result, the preparations were all in enamel. The final restorations exhibited excellent esthetics.
