Arthur Volker, DDS, has made it his mission to stay at the forefront of new developments in dentistry. At Volker's Sunnyside, New York, multispecialty practice, he aims to use the best techniques, technologies, and materials available. Among the many innovative materials that Volker relies on in his practice to provide top-tier restorative and cosmetic dentistry, he cites OMNICHROMA® one-shade universal composite for its versatility.
As a single-shade universal composite, OMNICHROMA leverages Smart Chromatic Technology to be able to match all 16 of the shades on the VITA classical A1-D4® shade guide. The paste is white and opaque before curing, which makes it highly visible during placement. After curing, the material becomes natural in appearance and matches the surrounding tooth structure by using ambient light to reflect its color. OMNICHROMA cures in increments up to 2-mm thick and can be used with Tokuyama Universal Bond or any resin-compatible bonding agent. "I am definitely impressed with how well OMNICHROMA blends in," Volker says. "It really demonstrates a chameleon effect with only one shade. Another advantage of needing only one shade of composite is that clinicians can really reduce their inventories."
OMNICHROMA's indications include direct anterior and posterior restorations, direct bonded composite veneers, diastema closures, the repair of porcelain/composite restorations, and more. "OMNICHROMA can be used in multiple clinical situations, both in the posterior and anterior regions," Volker says. "I particularly like it in cases where the shade is difficult to ascertain or the patient may bleach at some time in the future."
The OMNICHROMA family also includes OMNICHROMA Flow, which offers the same benefits as OMNICHROMA but with a more flowable consistency (medium viscosity). And for deeper restorations, OMNICHROMA Flow BULK provides a low viscosity option that can be placed in 3.5-mm increments. OMNICHROMA BLOCKER is a supplementary opaquing material that may be used in conjunction with OMNICHROMA to mask discoloration or stains or to build a lingual shelf in cases where not enough tooth structure is present, preventing shade-matching interference. "These materials are very easy to use in terms of handling and placement; however, care does have to be taken in areas of discoloration or fracture," Volker explains. "OMNICHROMA BLOCKER is invaluable to address these issues."
According to Volker, the benefits of these products help his office to operate more smoothly. "With no need to obtain a shade match, as we have to do with more traditional composites, we can work more quickly and effectively," he says. "At the end of the day, OMNICHROMA is a unique product that simply makes dentistry easier."
