Adhesion is a dental miracle. Gone are the days where we had to rely on meticulous convenience form, praying that the retention and resistance provided by the converging walls would keep our restorations in place. Since we have had the gift of reliable chemical adhesion on our side, we have been able to perform restorative dentistry with much greater peace of mind. Over the years, bonding systems have changed significantly from the traditional three-step, three-bottle systems (ie, etchant, primer, bonding agent). After 40 years of adhesion research, BISCO has finally optimized the formula for one of the most indispensable products on the market today: All-Bond Universal®.
In a typical direct composite restorative sequence at our practice, after the tooth is prepared accordingly, we follow a total-etch or selective etch protocol where the preparation is etched with phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. The preparation is then rinsed off to remove all of the phosphoric acid, while ensuring that the cut dentin is kept moist to prevent collagen fibril collapse. Wet bonding is desirable for ideal hybridization and optimization of the bond strength. At this time, All-Bond Universal is applied to the preparation with a microbrush for about 15 seconds and then air-thinned with an air-water syringe. As the adhesive is air-thinned, you can see the solvent evaporate, and a nice glossy surface sheen remains on the dentin. This serves as a visual confirmation that the dentin has been properly saturated with primer and adhesive. Afterward, the restoration proceeds via incremental installments of resin composite material.
Although our office employs the total-etch and selective-etch techniques for resin composite restorations, in situations in which a self-etch protocol is indicated, such as bonding a zirconia crown, All-Bond Universal provides strong and reliable shear bond strength to dentin with virtually no postoperative sensitivity. All-Bond Universal can be used with all indirect restorations, including crowns, inlays, onlays, Maryland bridges, and more. The applications of All-Bond Universal are vast, and it will become a valuable addition to any restorative dentist's armamentarium.
