Patient-Centered Care Meets Streamlined Adhesion
BISCO’s All-Bond Universal® simplifies workflows while delivering superior results
Lauren Yasuda Rainey, DDS, has worn different hats over the course of her career. "I've been an associate and owner, worked in corporate dentistry and in private practice, and taught both in university settings and as an independent educator," she says. "Right now, I'm fairly evenly split between education and clinical practice, and I love the variety it provides. I have not only had the opportunity to build great relationships within my practice with patients and other providers but also had the opportunity to meet and get to know some wonderful folks on the industry side."
When it comes to clinical practice, Rainey's primary focus is to provide patient-centered care. "I want to make sure that my patients feel heard and understood," she says. "My role as their provider is to explain all of the options available and then help them decide which treatment path might best serve their needs." To that end, Rainey never hesitates to refer patients out. "I fully recognize that I am not the best provider for all facets of dental care, and I work with exceptional specialists to ensure that all outcomes are focused on the patient's ideal outcome."
Rainey explains that her role as an educator has enabled her to learn more about dental materials and some of the companies behind the most dependable products, which in turn has made her a better practitioner. "Getting to know the dental product vendors and their teams of scientists and researchers has opened up a wealth of knowledge that I can bring back to my own clinical practice and then share with other doctors during the courses I teach," she says.
Among these products is All-Bond Universal® from BISCO, which Rainey actually first learned about from a team member. "I first tried All-Bond Universal at the suggestion of an assistant who joined my team around 2017," she says. "She had already spent nearly 2 decades working with a high-end prosthodontist and had seen many products come and go. After trying it and being pleased with the results myself, it became one of my regular go-to products. I had wanted something reliable and consistent, and that's exactly what All-Bond Universal provided.
All-Bond Universal is a highly versatile light-cure universal adhesive that can be used for both direct and indirect restorations; is compatible with light-, dual-, and self-cure materials; and offers the flexibility for total-, self-, and selective-etch procedures. "I have used All-Bond Universal for both direct and indirect restorative procedures with very little concern about postoperative sensitivity in either case," Rainey says. "In my practice, I use both light-cure and dual-cure materials, and All-Bond Universal is compatible with both, which simplifies my clinical protocols. Most of the time, I use a selective-etch technique and have had many years of success with All-Bond Universal in that fashion. However, I have also had great clinical results using it with a total-etch technique."
Representing the culmination of more than 30 years of adhesive research at BISCO, All-Bond Universal offers many advantages. As a truly single-bottle system, it is compatible with all resin cements with no need for an additional activator, which simplifies the entire restorative procedure and ultimately reduces chair time. "I started to pivot toward a universal adhesive to move away from a two-bottle system, where inevitably, we would run out of one bottle before the other, or one bottle would get misplaced," Rainey says. "The single bottle of All-Bond Universal not only simplifies our process but also doesn't require refrigeration or other activators depending on what cements we are using for indirect restorative."
Other advantages to All-Bond Universal's formula include that it contains MDP monomers for enhanced durability, possesses a low film thickness, and results in virtually no postoperative sensitivity. It demonstrates impressive bond strength to all substrates and high shear bond strength to dentin. "All-Bond Universal has a reliable surface thickness that is easy to visualize when air-thinning, and it thins out evenly," Rainey says. "The water content in an adhesive affects its pH, with a higher water content providing more ions and leading to a more acidic product in the presence of MDP. The water content of All-Bond Universal is very low, which means that it is less acidic than many of the other universal adhesives on the market. This is beneficial because some initiators in dual-cure products, such as cements and buildup materials, are deactivated by the higher acidity of some universal adhesives, and that is why they must rely on an additional activator to be effective."
Rainey especially enjoys partnering with BISCO because of the expertise that its dedicated professionals bring to the table. "If I ever have a question, the team at BISCO is quick to respond with data from the literature as well as anecdotal evidence," she says. "It's one thing to read something in a journal, but quite another to do something in real life, so I appreciate both." When it comes to product support, Rainey gives BISCO two thumbs up. "There have been times in the past that I've tried a product, and it didn't perform as well as I thought it should. A simple phone call to BISCO was all it took to get troubleshooting tips and suggestions for how to make the product perform as expected," she says. "Not only do I get excellent help on the call but also a follow-up call and have even been provided with charts, tables, and articles to make sure that I really understood the science that I was calling and asking about."
In practical terms, Rainey concludes that All-Bond Universal is a standout product. "All-Bond Universal fits into the consistent workflow of the team that I work with," she says. "The streamlined approach relies on the science developed by BISCO, and for all of the benefits it provides, it is incredibly easy to use. If you'd like to standardize your adhesive protocols without sacrificing performance, All-Bond Universal is the solution you've been looking for."
