Streamlining Workflows and Optimizing Patient Outcomes
The Isolite® Pro sets the stage for any procedure by providing retraction, suction, and illumination
Mollie K. Rojas, DMD, leads a thriving practice in Chicago, Illinois, that offers a comprehensive range of dental services. Her practice is centered on building strong relationships with patients and delivering personalized care. As the owner of the practice, Rojas works alongside a dedicated team of dental professionals that includes her colleagues and a full team of hygienists. Since taking over the practice in 2019, Rojas has consistently sought out innovative tools to enhance the delivery of care, streamline workflows, and help ensure optimal patient outcomes. One such innovation that has played a significant role in her practice is the Zyris Isolite®, an advanced all-in-one dental isolation system. Rojas first encountered the Isolite during her time as an associate dentist after graduating dental school in 2016. "It was something that I was already both familiar with and really comfortable using," she says. "I really appreciated all of the capabilities it offered to me and my patients."
The Isolite combines the benefits of isolation, continuous suction, and illumination, offering a comprehensive solution that addresses several of the challenges encountered during dental procedures. According to Rojas, its ability to retract the tongue and cheeks for ideal access, provide optimal moisture control with continuous hands-free saliva and water evacuation, and offer clear, shadowless illumination for superior visibility has greatly enhanced the way that she practices dentistry. Rojas emphasizes that one of the most significant advantages of the Isolite is its impact on patient comfort. "I've heard from patients that it really alleviates their anxiety," she says. "They don't have to think about holding their mouths open, and they can relax more because they don't have to worry about where to put their tongue."
The Isolite mouthpiece serves multiple functions, providing retraction, a bite block, dual-channel suction control, and airway protection. "It keeps patients' mouths open without them having to hold it open themselves," Rojas explains. "This makes the procedure easier on patients, and they don't have to constantly open and close their mouths to clear away water or saliva." Patients seem to appreciate the ability to focus on the procedure without being distracted by the need to manage moisture or positioning. "A lot of patients say things like, ‘I've never had this before,' or ‘No offense, but I hate going to the dentist,' but after using the Isolite, they say things like, ‘Wow, I actually really liked this,'" Rojas says. "It's really gratifying to see that patients are more comfortable and that some even feel like they can almost fall asleep during the procedure."
From a clinical perspective, Rojas is pleased with the efficiency that she has gained from using the Isolite in her practice. "It makes everything faster and easier," she says. "It sucks up all of the water, and you don't have to stop and start constantly. You can focus on the procedure without worrying about moisture control." This continuous suction feature is particularly beneficial during restorative procedures. In addition, Rojas finds that the Isolite allows her to work more efficiently with her assistant. "I can have my assistant prepare things for the next step in the procedure or even attend to another patient while I'm still working," she says. This flexibility increases the overall efficiency of her practice and reduces the time spent on each patient.
The ability to maintain a dry, clear field during procedures has a direct impact on patient outcomes. "In terms of moisture control, the Isolite helps maintain a dry field, which is essential for composite restorations," Rojas says. "It minimizes saliva contact with the tooth and helps ensure a better bond, resulting in more predictable outcomes. The Isolite provides an isolated environment that's about as close to that of a rubber dam as you can get without actually using one. Although rubber dams are great for moisture control, they're not always practical in every situation. The Isolite offers a more efficient, less invasive alternative that still minimizes potential complications and delivers excellent results."
Another key benefit of the Isolite is its versatility. Rojas uses it across a wide range of procedures, from composite fillings to crown and veneer placements, the removal of attachments for clear aligner treatment, and more. "It works really well for composite restorations and crown preparation because it allows me to focus on the procedure without worrying about managing retraction or moisture," she says. "And with something like silver diamine fluoride placement, it helps minimize the strong taste and acidity of the material for the patient, which improves the overall experience." The Isolite also comes in handy during hygiene procedures, some of which Rojas occasionally performs. She uses it for scaling and root planing and other periodontal treatments. "It's great for hygiene because it makes the procedures much easier to perform," she says. "You don't have to worry about retracting the tongue or managing moisture while working with instruments like a cavitron or piezo scaler."
In addition to the Isolite, Rojas also utilizes Zyris's HOOPLA™ Retractor, either alone or in conjunction with the Isolite posterior mouthpiece, to provide anterior lip and cheek retraction in certain situations. "The HOOPLA is a great addition for certain procedures, especially clear aligner attachment placement and veneer work," she says. "It provides excellent retraction and helps keep the soft tissues out of the way, which greatly improves access to the treatment area."
Regarding customer support, Rojas speaks highly of Zyris. "They're a fantastic company-super personable and always responsive," she says. "When you email them, it's an actual person on the other side who will help you. They're constantly innovating and looking for ways to improve their products.
For Rojas, the Zyris Isolite is an indispensable tool in her practice. Its ability to enhance patient comfort, improve clinical outcomes, and increase efficiency has made it an essential part of her dental toolkit. "It's such a low investment for what you get out of it," she says. "I can't imagine working without it."
