3Shape introduced its TRIOS 6 intraoral scanner alongside its TRIOS Dx Plus diagnostic software and DentalHealth app at this year’s International Dental Show (IDS), according to a March 25, 2025 press release from the company. The new system incorporates several technological advancements aimed at enhancing both the quality of diagnostics and the communication between dental professionals and their patients, increasing patient engagement and ultimately improving the overall treatment process.
The TRIOS 6 intraoral scanner integrates hyperspectral technology, which enables it to capture data from white, fluorescent, and near-infrared light sources simultaneously. This allows the scanner to detect five key oral health conditions: surface caries, proximal caries (available end of 2025), plaque, tooth wear, and gingival recession. The TRIOS 6 scanner also features 3Shape’s patented ScanAssist intelligent alignment technology and sensory feedback, which facilitate smooth and precise scanning. When compared with previous models, TRIOS 6 delivers up to 110% higher resolution, offering dental professionals enhanced scan quality. In addition, the scanner is calibration-free and lightweight, weighing just 10.8 oz (308 g), which makes it easy to handle during procedures.
According to 3Shape’s chief executive officer Jacob Paulsen, “As transformative as our launch of the world’s first wireless intraoral scanner was back in 2017, the new TRIOS 6, together with TRIOS Dx Plus software and the DentalHealth app, will revolutionize the way dentists work.”
Exclusively compatible with TRIOS 6 scans, the TRIOS Dx Plus software assists clinicians in detecting oral health conditions in scan data (pending clearance by the FDA for clinical use in the United States). This software enables practitioners to visualize the aforementioned five key oral health conditions with their patients on a screen and monitor them over time. Dentists can also share these visualizations directly with patients through 3Shape’s new DentalHealth app. The DentalHealth app allows patients to view their intraoral scans and associated diagnostic information on their own devices. It also provides educational content and tips aimed at encouraging better dental habits.
“Dentistry is evolving, but at its core, it remains a patient-dentist relationship,” says Paulsen. “With the launch of TRIOS 6, TRIOS Dx Plus software, and the DentalHealth app, we aim to strengthen this bond by empowering patients to co-own their dental health. We believe that these innovations will help to significantly improve patient acceptance rates, foster trust, and importantly, help dental professionals grow their practices.”
