Forward Science has partnered with Sage Dental to launch PerioStōm®, a non-drug product designed to protect oral mucosal tissue following procedures such as scaling and root planing (SRP). The product is now available to dental practices across the United States.
According to the company, PerioStōm uses chitosan microspheres to form a protective barrier over the oral mucosa. The FDA-cleared treatment offers a non-invasive option intended to support recovery and reduce irritation following iatrogenic procedures.
The collaboration between Forward Science and Sage Dental began in 2024 and focused on evaluating PerioStōm in a clinical setting. Patients undergoing SRP were treated with the product and monitored for 30 days. The companies report that improvements were observed in gingival health, bleeding on probing, and patient-reported outcomes.
“At Sage Dental, we are committed to advancing patient care through innovative solutions,” said Misty Mattingly, senior vice president and chief of dental hygiene operations at Sage Dental. “Our partnership with Forward Science reflects our dedication to providing effective, non-drug options that enhance patient comfort and support recovery.”
Robert J. Whitman, chief executive officer of Forward Science, said, “We are excited to collaborate with Sage Dental to bring PerioStōm to dental practices nationwide. This partnership aligns with our mission to deliver cutting-edge, non-drug solutions that address patient needs effectively.”
