There is no doubt that dentistry is going digital in all aspects. With data acquisition as a crucial part of everyday treatment planning, an intraoral scanner needs to be part of the digital toolbox. An ADA Clinical Evaluators report in 2021 showed that approximately 53% of dentists use intraoral scanners.1 While implementation is growing, about half of dentists still don’t realize the benefits of having a digital scanner, even though this technology’s images and information can improve clinical efficiency. Now, there is a wireless scanner—DEXIS Imprevo—that surpasses others in its category for precision and speed, even when scanning complex dentition.
Why Digital Impressions?
The benefits of digital impressions reach beyond the dental chair, but first and foremost, is patient comfort. No dentist wants patients to gag in the chair or dread their dental visit. With a swish of the wand, a quick and neat scan of the mouth saves patients from that anxiety and stress. Relieved and happy patients tell their friends or post on social media about their good experience at their dentist. You really want to be known as “the dentist with the awesome technology.”
Patients also don’t learn anything from a traditional impression, but a digital scan can provide them with a clear visual of their problem areas. These teachable moments can lead to case acceptance. Speed and convenience are also benefits. The digital image is ready immediately, and the fact that the scans can be securely sent to the lab instead of mailed or picked up can eliminate several days of waiting for the case to be completed (or frustration if the impression is lost in transit). Additionally, there’s no inventory of alginate impressions in the closet, saving precious office space. Plus, digital scans do not produce any waste.
DEXIS Imprevo — Bringing DEXIS Expertise to Digital Impressions
For me, the name DEXIS is synonymous with excellent technology and outstanding customer service. The DEXIS Titanium sensor has grown to become the leading intraoral sensor in the United States, and its newest generation, the DEXIS Ti2 Sensor, has even more durability and added AI capabilities. After demonstrating its ingenuity in 2D and 3D imaging, intraoral scanning, diagnostics, treatment planning, and workflow, DEXIS is now extending its enthusiasm for innovative design and collaboration to its Imprevo scanner. The Imprevo is designed solely by the DEXIS team, improving upon the already exceptional design that was a hallmark of the scanner’s previous generations.
DEXIS is not new to the scanner market. The previous generation, the 3800 series, was already light, fast, and simple to use. Imprevo is even faster and produces sharper images with AI-assisted accuracy.
The enhancements of the Imprevo speak for themselves:
-
20% slimmer than the 3800
-
Captures 40 FPS frames per second and powerful parallel processing
-
Depth of field increased by over 39%
-
More realistic digital impression images due to the white LED enhancing colors and renderings
-
Provides sharp detail, even in tight places
-
Faster than the 3800
-
Fewer rescans, and more accurate impressions due to advanced scanning algorithms
-
2.0 Software provides an easier user experience
A blend of all of these advanced technologies leads to practice-changing results. Laser precision combined with white LED lighting creates sharper and ultra-detailed images. The laser actually produces a better and brighter light source—resulting in a 25 mm depth of field—one of the best depths of field in the market. This lets clinicians easily capture deep preps and tight interproximal spaces.
Here’s the part I’m most excited about, the inclusion of DTX Studio™ Clinic software that organizes and incorporates all of patient’s 2D imaging, 3D imaging, and digital photography in one place. Add the digital scans to that mix for the full picture of options for the patient’s past and future treatment. DTX Studio can be used for diagnostics, patient education, treatment planning, creating surgical guides, setting up cases, 3D tooth positioning, annotating mandibular nerve canals, and other tasks that would take many more hours if done manually. DTX Studio Clinic repeatedly has been chosen by a distinguished panel of dental professionals as a winner of the prestigious Cellerant Best in Class Technology Award for continuous software innovation.
Besides the advancements in technology of Imprevo, the “protocol-free scanning” simplifies the documentation process. Some scanners require the user to enter information in an order form before scanning. With Imprevo, the user can just pick up the scanner and start scanning the patient. The information is entered after, so if there is a mess-up or the clinician wants to redo the scan, they do not have to also re-enter patient information.
The Human Touch
Over the years, exemplary customer service has always been an important part of the DEXIS legacy. Training is tailored to the individual practice’s needs and goals. A knowledgeable field technician still comes to the dental office to provide training and technical support. For those who want phone or online contact, DEXIS also has over 200 people on the support line answering North American calls. For ongoing education, DEXIS continues to invest online educational opportunities as well.
Practical Pricing
The ADA reported that the main barrier among those who do not use an intraoral scanner is the high financial investment. About 66% of nonusers cited the budget as their reason for not using this technology.1 If the bottom line of upgrading a practice to digital scanning is price, the Imprevo scanner makes this a non-issue. Imprevo can be purchased at $14,500 (without a laptop). That includes the Best of Class DTX Studio software, a phenomenal bonus, which usually costs about $10,000. If offices are using other DEXIS software, there's also an integration option within those applications.
DEXIS is constantly exploring how to make the dentist and patient experience better. Going digital is not just taking a scan; it’s also choosing technology that can use that scan to its best advantage. One of the future goals of the DEXIS team is the creation of the DEXIS Academy in 2026, which will be a place to find detailed information on DEXIS products and services. Stay tuned for more information on that. With all of the history DEXIS has for creating high-quality products, the upgrades found in the DEXIS Imprevo digital scanner are no surprise, and they certainly attest to the company’s continued positive investment in workflow, accuracy, and patient comfort.
