After 10 years, William Giannobile, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, will end his term as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research (JDR) on March 31, 2020.
Giannobile is the Najjar Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics & Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He received his D.D.S. and M.S. in Oral Biology from the University of Missouri Kansas City, USA and his Certificate in Periodontology and D.M.Sc. in Oral Biology from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Giannobile is an internationally-recognized expert in the field of dental tissue engineering and has authored books and numerous articles relevant to the clinical and translational oral health research field. Giannobile started his term as JDR Editor-in-Chief in 2010.
“Serving as JDR Editor-in-Chief has been an amazing opportunity and one of the most rewarding endeavors in my professional career. I believe that now is the time to bring forth the next round of leadership,” said Giannobile. “I have been able to accomplish the major objectives set out for me to advance the journal and to leave it in a place where a fresh perspective can bring the journal to even greater heights. I feel privileged to have been able to follow such capable and forward-thinking editors who have made the JDR the leading source of research findings for over a century.”
Under Giannobile’s leadership, the JDR currently holds its highest 2-Year Impact Factor in the “Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine” category at 5.380. This is the first time the Journal’s Impact Factor has reached above 5 and marks a 13% increase from its 2016 Impact Factor.
JDR is jointly owned by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and both presidents had high praise for Giannobile’s accomplishments. “Dr. Giannobile brought the JDR to new heights, in collaboration with his editorial team, by enhancing the peer review process with rapid and high-quality reviews,” said IADR President Rena D’Souza. “The journal’s metrics have exceeded all of our expectations, securing JDR as the go-to journal for dental, oral and craniofacial research excellence”, added AADR President Maria Ryan.
